About Us
Why we can print these
Every painting in our collection is in the public domain.
In the United States, works published before 1930 are free for anyone to use. For more recent work, copyright runs for the artist's lifetime plus 70 years.
That's why you'll find Van Gogh, Monet, Klimt, Hokusai and Vermeer here — and why you won't find Picasso, Matisse, Kahlo or Dalí. Those artists died within the last seventy years, their estates still hold the rights, and printing them without a license would be infringement.
We check the artist's dates before anything enters the range. It's an unglamorous rule and it's the whole basis of what we do.
The part most stores get wrong
A painting being out of copyright is one question. Whether the photograph of it is free to use is another — and the answer differs by country.
In the United States, it's settled. In Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp., a federal court held that an exact photographic reproduction of a flat, public-domain artwork isn't itself copyrightable, because faithfully copying something requires no original authorship.
A straight, accurate scan of a public-domain painting is free to use in the US.
That doesn't cover everything. A photograph taken at an angle, under dramatic lighting, or of a sculpture involves creative choices and can carry its own copyright. We work from flat, front-on reproductions, and we source from institutions that publish their collections openly — the Met, the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Rijksmuseum.
Every product page names the artist, the title and the year. Partly respect, partly practical: it's what you'd want to know before wearing it.
Resolution decides what size works
A file that looks perfect on a phone can fall apart at poster size.
Print size is limited by the resolution of the source scan, not by what our printer can do. A 2,000-pixel-wide file is fine on a t-shirt chest print. The same file on a 24-inch canvas is soft and obviously so.
We match each painting to the sizes its source file actually supports, and we don't offer a size that won't hold up.
If a particular work isn't available in the size you want, that's why — and we'd rather say so than sell you a blurry print.
What survives the transfer, and what doesn't
Detail survives well. Brushwork, canvas texture and craquelure come through on a good scan, often more clearly than at arm's length in a gallery.
Colour is harder. Historical pigments sit outside what textile inks can reproduce — the deep blues in Starry Night and the mineral greens in Renaissance work are the most stubborn. What you get is close, not identical, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling you something.
The fabric changes the image. The same print on white, natural and black produces three different results, because the base colour shows through. Where a piece is available on more than one, we show each.
Looking after a print
Wash inside out, cold, and skip the fabric conditioner. Conditioner sits on the print and dulls it.
Air dry where you can. Heat is what cracks prints — a tumble dryer does more damage in one cycle than ten washes.
That advice costs us sales to people replacing faded shirts. It's also true.
What we don't do
Claim we made the art. We didn't. These are works by people who died long before any of us, and we print them because the law allows it.
Inflate prices to discount them. The price is the price.
Manufacture urgency. No countdown timers, no "only two left" when there are two hundred.
Overclaim. A printed shirt won't make you an art lover or prove you are one. What it does is smaller: you carry around something you like looking at.
Ask before you order
Not sure which size to take, how a painting reproduces at a particular scale, or whether an image works better on a light or dark base?
Email us. Tell us the piece and what you're after, and we'll answer honestly — including when a particular painting doesn't print well at the size you want.
We'd rather give good advice than process a return.
